STRAP
Strategic Action Against Piracy, STRAP was introduced by The Nigerian Copyright Commission as the national anti-piracy campaign for effective protection against piracy and all forms of intellectual property theft. STRAP was launched on May 3 2005 by Mr. President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at Sheraton Hotel & Towers Lagos. STRAP is conceived as the Commission’s main enforcement platform to bring about a drastic reduction in the level of piracy and other forms of copyright abuses.

 

STRAP
Recognizes the menace of piracy to the growth of national economy.
Realizes the negative effect of piracy to creativity and the survival of copyright industries.
Recognizes the development of a viable distribution system for all copyrighted works in Nigeria.
Pursues a systematic and sustainable campaign for the survival of the entertainment, publishing, software and information technology and other copyright –based industries.

OBJECTIVES

  • To combat all forms of piracy of music, film, software, books and all other protected works.
  • To create a conducive environment for copyright protection for all categories of works.
  • To empower local industries, create opportunities for legitimate distribution of protected works and attract foreign investment.
  • Through a sustained campaign, to restore the image of Nigeria as a country that upholds the ideals of creativity.
COMPONENTS
  • Mass Enlightenment
    To inform and educate the public on the scourge of piracy, increase copyright awareness and the need to respect creativity through integrated media campaign.

  • Enforcement
    To intensify enforcement in accordance with the powers of the Commission under the Copyright Act through:
    Anti-piracy raids.
    Destruction and seizure of pirated works.
    Arrest and prosecution of offenders
    Conversion programme
    Mediation of disputes under the Copyright Litigation, Assistance and Mediation Programme (CLAMP)


  • Administration of Rights
    To assist right owners through regulatory and administrative measures/schemes, namely:
    Regulation of optical Disc Manufacturing Plants
    Hologram Scheme
    Video rental Scheme
    Copyright Notification Scheme
    Intellectual Property Compliance Program
    Databank of copyright works

STRAP is an open platform for stakeholders and other beneficiaries to bring about drastic reduction in the level of piracy, counterfeiting and other forms of intellectual property theft.

Is a gross human right violator

Is economic sabotage.

Threatens right to life and livelihood.

Impoverishes the creative industry.

Aids and abets "419", Money Laundering, Drug peddling and other organized crimes.
